It was 1994 when Tonya became a celebrity after her main opponent Nancy Kerrigan mysteriously was assaulted just prior to the National Championship. Tonya benefited from this recognition and popularity so well that she changed the culture of women's skating. Many academics have used her life story as a way to judge and assess students. A biopic, titled I, Tonya, was also released in the year 2017.
